Definition of internship

Internship is the position of students or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without pay in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for qualification.

Internship objectives

UNIT: INTENSIVE CARE

• Assist in basic resuscitation technique
• Nurse and monitor unconscious patients
• Assist in oxygen administration
• Rendering of holistic care to patients

UNIT: THEATRE

• Identify by name and functions types of operating instruments, types of sutures, needles and suture materials
• Preparation for surgical materials
• Demonstrate skill in pre and post -operative nursing care
• Monitor and report accurately on the post-operative state of patient
• Acquire skills in patients teaching and post-operative rehabilitation for post-surgery convalescence patient
• surgical washing of hands
• Demonstrate skills in applying the non-touch technique in the operating room
• Gowning and gloving
• Participate in at least six different types of surgeries
• Write the shift hand over report accurately and clearly
• Constantly monitor patient’s condition during and after surgery
• Do post-operative reanimation
• Participate in oxygen therapy

UNIT: ANC/IWC/FAMILY PLANNING

• Procedure of booking clinic
• Identify the different ANC laboratory investigations and their rationale
• drawing up a health education lecture
• Identifying and assessing EPI targeted disease and population
• Identify the principal of infant vaccinations
• Identifying the principal vaccine for pregnant women and women of child bearing age
• Assessing and monitoring the vaccinations calendar
• Monitor vaccinations reactions
• The cold chain
• Assessing the nutritional status of pregnant women and for infant and children
• Assessing children of malnutrition growth pattern
• Assessing and educating mothers on weaning food

UNIT: PEADIATRIC/NEONATOLOGY

• Do administration of a sick child history taking weight and vital signs
• Do observation on a sick child
• Calculate the drugs dosage of children
• Administered drug to a baby
• Monitor infusions and blood transfusions and nite any reaction
• Give health education to mothers on care with children with malnutrition, anemia and other specific reactions
• Assist in writing report
• Take part in handling and taking over
• Resuscitation of the baby
• Care of a new born

• Daily observation of a new born
• Breastfeeding a new born

• Implement the immediate nursing care plan of at least six babies born to HIV
• Identify nursing problems and draw up strategic plans for the care of postnatal mothers
• Assessing pregnant women for anemia, diabetes, helminthic infection
• Assessing for uterine pregnancy, bleeding in pregnancy
• Assessing difference cases of abortion
• Identify prolong pregnancy
• Assessing laceration of the perineum, vaginal, cervix and postpartum hemorrhage

The health apostolate in BUEA town parish is characterized by mount Mary hospital which was created on the sixth may 1967.it began down is Small Soppo as a maternity and later was transferred under the foot of mount Cameroon were it later had other department such as the maternity, medical unit, surgical unit, outpatient department, eye clinic, ANC unit, theater, pediatric unit, medical laboratory, pharmacy.
