GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The significance of leaders in achieving excellent organisational skills cannot be overemphasizing. Effective leadership has been widely acknowledged as a potential instrument for achieving organization goal and objectives especially in Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation (LUKMEF) Buea.

Leadership is a vital part of managing the abiding to lead effectively is one of the keys to be a successful boss. The nature of leadership is followership.

In other words, it is people’s willingness to pursue others that they believe will help them achieve their own goals, wishes, or needs. As a result, any company that wishes to achieve its objectives must have an effective and productive leadership team that understands how to implement all management concepts in order to achieve its objectives.

The leader must possess zeal, as well as the willingness to work with zeal and trust. Having strong feelings, earnestness, and intensity in the execution of work is reflected by enthusiasm, while courage is reflected by experience and technical skill. To lead means guiding, conducting, or directing others to do what they want in order to achieve organizational objectives.

Leaders should not be individuals who stand behind a community or entity to force them to do something; rather, they should act to assist a group in achieving its goals by maximizing its capabilities.

This is the type of leadership we want in our organization, especially in the management and technology institute.

Furthermore, any company without effective and productive leadership is comparable to driving a car in the dark without a headlight.

Leadership is an important part of management; one of the keys to becoming a successful boss is the ability to lead effectively; the essence of leadership is fellowship. In other words, a leader is defined by the desire of others to obey. Furthermore, people prefer to pursue those that they believe will help them achieve their own dreams, wishes, and needs.

That is why, in order to achieve its goals, every company must have an effective and productive leadership team that understands how to apply all management principles to achieve its goals. The leader must be enthusiastic and confident in his or her abilities.

Trust reflects the knowledge and technical skill, while zeal reflects ardour, earnestness, and passion in the execution of work. Leading entails guiding, conducting, directing, and moving forward. Leaders help a company accomplish its goals by making the best use of its resources. They should not be leaders who do not support and encourage a party or association. They should take a place in front of you.

The group as they aid success and motivate the group to achieve organizational objectives. This is the type of leadership we want in our institutions, especially at LUKMEF. Furthermore, any company without successful and productive leadership is comparable to driving a car at night without a headlight.

This could be very risky, as well as limiting their ability to achieve their goals. Inefficient and ineffective leadership could be to blame for most organizations’ failure to achieve their goals and objectives. According to Katz and Kahn (1978:p.16), leadership is clearly described as a power, or the art or method of persuading people to work together to achieve a common goal.

This definition can be broadened to include not only a desire to work but also a desire to work with passion and trust. In the execution of work, zeal reflects ardour, earnestness, and strength, while courage reflects the experience and technical capacity.

Leading entails guiding, conducting, directing, and preceding. The Institute of Management and Technology faces the following challenges in achieving its objectives. Ineffective leadership, environmental causes, policy inconsistency, political turmoil, government intervention, inadequate funding, and poor management are just a few of them.

1.2 RESEARCH PROBLEM

Managing People in Organizations is a part and parcel of the administration Process. Therefore, administrators should realize, that people are the critical elements in organisations and that they should be recognized as being synonymous with the organisation.

But the problem is, to what extent do Leaders and administrators recognize this fact that employees are synonymous with Organizations’ and that they should be adequately motivated so that they can give their best to ensure the achievement of the organization’s goals.

Again the leadership behaviour/style in most organizations that believe that workers could be treated anyhow as a result of the unemployment situation in the country which makes job switch difficult has resulted in the hardship workers face in their places of work in Cameroon.

This leadership style has an influence on organizational culture change and/or development, which has an impact on organizational performance and commitment.

Furthermore, some researchers are of the opinion that the most common problems affecting organisational performance  in Cameroons businesses  and other institutions are poor attitude  to work among the workforce, inefficiency and ineffectiveness of leaders in most places, others  still believe that organisations in Cameroon are managed through leadership styles

In view of the above contending issues, it was necessary to look at the significance of effective leadership in achieving organizational goals in LUKMEF. LUKMEF has been one of the leading Non-Governmental Organisation in the country and in Buea, particularly in terms of enhancing the protection of women’s rights and human rights.

One of her objectives is the integration of the individual with society and the promotion of the human right
This institution has trained and educated so many prominent Cameroonians on the respect of women’s rights and has helped in the enhancement of the promotion of human right especially the fight against Gender-based violence,

There is a relatively low level of standard in our facilities, motivation, strike actions, mismanagement of funds by officials of some organizations in Cameroon, there is a relatively low level of productively as most personnel are not putting in their best poor planning and implementation and their subordinates as this will not bring the fruitful result in the achievement of organisational goals in LUKMEF

To this extent, therefore to the objectives of this institution in this regard has not been comprehensively met.  One can therefore safely assume that.  When one passes through an organization like LUKMEF, he/she should be well prepared for participating and leadership roles in the development of the Cameroonian Society.
