An Assessment Of Road Transport And Its Effects On Traffic Congestion

ABSTRACT

Traffic congestion is a major problem in urban areas, including the Bamenda 3 municipality. The increasing number of vehicles on the road due to population growth and transportation demand has led to significant traffic congestion, impacting the quality of community life. This study aims to assess the impact of road transport and traffic congestion on community life, focusing on daily routines and lifestyle. The study collected data through on-site surveys using a reliable questionnaire, covering demographic information, opinions on traffic congestion, daily routines, and lifestyle. Statistical analysis was conducted on the collected data, revealing a significant positive correlation between road transport, traffic congestion, and the quality of community life. Daily routines were found to be more affected by traffic congestion than lifestyle. The study recommends attention to traffic planning and policy implementation to improve the transportation system and enhance community life quality.

1.1 Background Of The Study

Transportation plays a crucial role in economic growth, but the increasing number of vehicles on the road has led to widespread traffic congestion. Congestion, caused by factors such as narrow roads, limited parking, and ineffective traffic management, is a global problem that affects social, economic, and environmental aspects, including public health. Traffic congestion has a significant impact on the quality of community life, disrupting daily routines and lifestyle. Women are particularly affected by disruptions in daily routines, which often involve household management tasks. Lifestyle encompasses various aspects such as standard of living, health, and social activities, all of which can be negatively impacted by traffic congestion. The productivity and economic growth of cities or regions can be reduced when the quality of community life is disrupted by traffic congestion. Objective indicators, such as income and car ownership, as well as subjective factors like happiness and life satisfaction, contribute to the overall quality of life. Therefore, assessing the extent to which traffic congestion affects community life through daily routines and lifestyle is essential.

This study specifically focuses on assessing the effects of road transport and traffic congestion in the Bamenda 3 municipality.
