CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The relevance of local government in Cameroon has grown significantly over the years, owing to an increase in demand for local government development and an improvement in service delivery at the grass-roots level.
The importance of local government cannot be overstated because they were established in order to provide a two-way communication channel between a local community and the government, bridging the gap between the formal and informal sectors of society.
The need for local government is based on two major consecrations: the first is the decentralization of certain functions of the federal government, which was done in order to reduce the numerous functions of the government; and the second is the decentralization of certain functions of the federal government.
The second point to examine is that certain functions or services provided at the local level are intended to assist in the development of the grassroots. Prior to 1968, when we were divided into three regions (eastern, western, and central), the people’s problems were not adequately channeled, which resulted in the establishment of the state.
Local government can be considered an instrument for any real social, economic, educational, and political change in a country since they ensure that the local government develops uniformly and rapidly throughout the country, as well as within individual communities.
In essence, he is the most important agent for any meaningful social and economic growth, and no development can be achieved without the active participation of the vast majority of his citizens, the vast majority of whom reside in rural areas.
This is the contribution of rural people, who make up the majority of the population and are responsible for the growth of the country. Local governments carry out a large number of the responsibilities outlined in the fourth schedule of the 1979 Constitution.
- Consideration of economic planning and formulation of recommendations for submission to a state commission on economic planning.
Payment of rates and TV licenses. 2.
- The establishment and maintenance of eccentrics, a burial cemetery, and the house of the last destination of businesses.
- Issuing of licenses for bicycles, trucks, and automobiles, among other things.
- The establishment and maintenance of roadways struck and other infrastructures and utilities.
- The naming of the road and the numbering of the dwellings
upkeep of public conference and disposal facilities for refugee displaced persons
- It is, nevertheless, critical to highlight the fact that all of the necessary findings have been made. It will discuss the primary goals of revenue production and usage in local government areas, in addition to other feasible suggestions to improve and strengthen their revenue-based local government operations.
