Empowering Sustainable Aquaculture: The Impact of the Fish Rearers Association in the South West Region of Cameroon

The Fish Rearers Association (FIRA) has been a transformative force in the South West Region of Cameroon, driving sustainable aquaculture practices and creating meaningful economic opportunities. With a focus on empowering local communities, especially women, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), FIRA is not only enhancing food security but also fostering social inclusion and environmental sustainability.

One of FIRA’s key achievements has been the establishment and expansion of fish farming operations across the region. The association has successfully implemented innovative aquaculture technologies, such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which minimize water usage while maximizing fish production. This has allowed local farmers to produce high-quality fish at lower costs, making fish farming a viable and profitable venture.

The association’s commitment to training and capacity building has been instrumental in creating employment opportunities. By offering hands-on training in sustainable fish farming and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae production, FIRA has empowered hundreds of young women and men, enabling them to start and manage their own aquaculture businesses. These efforts have resulted in the creation of full-time jobs and self-employment opportunities, significantly improving the livelihoods of many families in the region.

FIRA’s impact extends beyond economic benefits. The association’s promotion of climate-smart practices, such as the use of BSF larvae as a sustainable fish feed, contributes to environmental conservation and resilience. These practices reduce reliance on traditional, less sustainable feed sources, thereby supporting the health of local ecosystems.

In addition to fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability, FIRA has also played a crucial role in strengthening community cohesion. By bringing together diverse groups and providing them with the tools and knowledge to succeed, FIRA is building a more inclusive and resilient community in the South West Region of Cameroon.
